Is it a snake? Is it poisonous? What kind is it?

The Basics...

So, you've found what you think is a snake and you want to know what kind it is. To make sure it is (or isn't) a snake, click on the first key in the list, "Is it a snake?"

When people call me about a snake they've found, their most urgent question is usually "Is it poisonous?" The second key answers that question.

Once you determine that a snake is either venomous or not, the next step is to identify the precise species of snake involved, so you can learn more about its habits. The third set of keys "what is its species?" will help with that.  This set of keys is under construction, and will probably take some time to get into shape.  However, some elements are working now.

We hope you will share your snake encounter experiences with us, so we can share them with other visitors to this site.  To read about the experiences of others, and to see photographs they took of the snakes they came into contact with, click on "Snake Encounters"
