Two years after I left the Jollyville Volunteer Fire Department, Chris Hanger joined up. I found that out on November 5, 2001, when Chris taught a class on "Vitals, Lifting & Moving, and Stretchers", at the Liberty Hill Volunteer Fire Dept. Station. Chris reminded the class that nobody should put another person on a stretcher unless he or she had first been subjected to the same indignity. It was good advice. Being strapped onto a gurney on the side of the highway, or while down in a ditch, and transported from there to the ambulance can be a frightening experience. Especially if the emergency workers do not inspire confidence by their words and actions. Chris knew that once you experienced it yourself, you would be a better EMT. You would be extra careful while transporting your patients, giving them words of reassurance so they would not worry that you and your partners might drop them. |
That was the way Chris went about his life.
He was a gentle soul, never concerned about himself, yet always concerned
about those around him. It was a trait that endeared him to all who were
fortunate enough to be his friend.
Besides the November 5 class, Chris later taught two classes on "Bandaging of Head, Spine, and Soft Tissue injuries." Had his life not been cut short, he was scheduled, along with his wife, Patricia, to teach classes in extrication and skills, during January of 2002. I learned that Chris had passed away shortly when I reported for duty at the Georgetown Hospital Emergency Room on Saturday, December 28. I was there to complete the last Emergency Room clinical required as part of the Liberty Hill EMT instruction curriculum... Go to page 2... |
