Basic Facts About Reptiles
Answers to questions you may have forgotten to ask...

The earth is home to at least 250 species of turtles, 25 species of crocodilians, 5,500 species of snakes, 3,000 species of lizards, 130 species of amphibians, and 2 ancient, almost extinct species of beaked  reptiles known as rhynchocephalians.

Most reptiles are carnivorous. They eat insects, other reptiles, and small animals. A few are herbivorous, preferring to eat plants while leaving their fellow animals alone. Reptiles have bony skeletons, but are ectothermic (cold-blooded). They have lungs, a heart with two atria and (usually) a single ventricle. Their skin is covered with scales or horny plates..

Reptiles fertilize their eggs internally and don't rely on water as a medium in which to lay their eggs.

Here are some questions to mull over: How are reptiles and dinosaurs related? Are salamanders reptiles?

We are currently studying the fossil footprints of several different dinosaurs that once roamed Texas. Photos of the footprints will be posted here before long.

We hope you will share your snake encounter experiences with us, so we can share them with other visitors to this site.  To read about the experiences of others, and to see photographs they took of the snakes they came into contact with, click on "Snake Encounters"
