Wolf Spider (Lycosidae),
Kempner, TX: 120508 pg 6
   The
ventral and lateral setae of the
various legs (photos at right, from far right and leftward, show first
the right pedipalp and leg 1, next leg 2, then leg 3, and finally, at
immediate right, leg 4) show--under the microscope but, unfortunately, not on these
photos--a scattering of trichobothria (long, fine, slender hairs on each
leg, projecting perpendicular to the leg shaft, beyond the other hairs
on the legs) on the tibiae and metatarsi of each leg. Legs 1 and 2
display four pairs of stouter, dark spines on the ventral tibia, with a
shortened metatarsus. Leg 3 displays 2 pairs of the dark, stout spines
on each of the ventral tibia and metatarsus. Leg 4 displays 2 pairs of
the dark, stout spines on the ventral tibia, and scattered dark, stout
spines on the ventral metatarsus.
Regarding trichobothria, the key in Ubick et al. (2005), pp. 33-35,
gives the analyst three choices: (1) 0-1 trichobothria, (2) 2 or more
with trichobothria in a single row, and (4) 2 or more with trichobothria
scattered. Microscopic analysis shows this specimen falls under the
third choice, which--along with a low clypeus and strongly recurved PER
and PLE posterior to PME, points us to the Lycosidae ----FINIS----
