Southern House Spider and Kululcania arizonica

image on the far right
is of a (male) spider photographed in Lubbock,
Texas, on October 14, 2008, by Ali H., PhD. Note that the proximal
joints and segments of each leg are not remarkably lighter in color than the carapace
or the remainder of the legs. This,
according
to one source, argues for its identification as Kukulcania
arizonica.
Further,
B.J. Kaston (1972), spiral, p. 74, seems to agree. The eyes (middle
image) are arranged like those of the southern house spider (Kukulcania hibernalis,
at far left), and as in K. hibernalis, the posterior median
eyes (PME) are highly reflective, so
that they boom in when illuminated by artificial lighting, as with a
flashlight. However, the AME and ALE are much reduced in Dr. H.'s
specimen, in comparison with
the AME and ALE of K. hibernalis. NEXT
