Southern House Spider and Kululcania arizonica (?) Compared

Kukulcania, Ali H PhD, Lubbock TX 101408 ProsomaKukulcania spp Lubbock TX Ali H PhD 101408 EyesKukulcania hibernalis, Central TX 1995 EyesThe image on the far right is of a (male) spider photographed in Lubbock, Texas, on October 14, 2008, by Ali H., PhD. Note that the proximal joints and segments of each leg are not remarkably lighter in color than the carapace or the remainder of the legs. This, according to one source, argues for its identification as Kukulcania arizonica. Further, B.J. Kaston (1972), spiral, p. 74, seems to agree. The eyes (middle image) are arranged like those of the southern house spider (Kukulcania hibernalis, at far left), and as in K. hibernalis, the posterior median eyes (PME) are highly reflective, so that they boom in when illuminated by artificial lighting, as with a flashlight. However, the AME and ALE are much reduced in Dr. H.'s specimen, in comparison with the AME and ALE of K. hibernalis.  NEXT PAGE ---- PAGE Menu:   1  *  2  *  3  *  4  *  5  *
