Western Cottonmouth Snake, 092708, Driftwood, TX

Western Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) Ann D Driftwood TX 092708This mature western cottonmouth snake was photographed in its natural setting by Ann D. in Driftwood, Texas. Ann wrote: "Jerry---My husband and I saw this snake yesterday at a friend's ranch in Driftwood, Texas, on Onion Creek just before dark. The picture is taken just below my friend's dam--the creek isn't flowing, so there are just puddles. Someone identified it as a yellow-bellied water snake (Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster), but we think it is a cottonmouth. We'd like your opinion!"  ME: a firm i.d., from the first photo Ann sent (not the one on the right), wasn't possible. So she sent more images, and this one plus others shown on later pages, confirm this is a cottonmouth. Note the head in this photo. It bulges at the neck and tapers in a straight line to the nose. The body is stout, but the scales are weakly keeled, almost smooth. Ann described the snake as docile, almost too unconcerned she and her husband were nearby. NEXT PAGE
