Texas Patch-nosed Snake, Jeff T.,
West Lake Hills, TX 101908
The
photo at right was taken by Jeff T., in
West Lake Hills, west of Austin, Texas. He wrote:
"Today I saw a snake eating another snake in the woods near my home in
West Lake Hills. It was out in a field. Can you tell me what kind it is?
The snake it was swallowing was the same kind, only smaller. I have seen
several of these around my house over the last three years."
Shortly after this post, Jeff wrote another telling me he had done
further research and determined this was a Texas patch-nosed snake. This
species (Salvadora grahamiae lineata) is described in some
detail by
Werler & Dixon (2000), pp. 254-256 (recommended
reading).
