Eastern Diamond-Backed Rattlesnake, Clearwater FL 122808The photo at right was sent by Anna, of Clearwater, Florida. She wrote: "This snake bit my 9 lb dog, Koji. The snake was in the middle of the walkway in front of our house. It was 70-80 deg. outside. We have never seen a rattlesnake in our area before. There is a small lake behind our house, and a golf course down the street. Every yard has shrubbery. The snake struck my dog & immediately the hemotoxins took effect. Her face swelled at the bite on her nose, all the way down to her neck, with skin discoloration & edema for the next 48 hours. Her blood count decreased to less than 45% of normal, and she was in immense pain. One vial of anti-venin was not enough, but we used the last vial of anti-venin intended for dogs in the entire state, then opted to try the HUMAN form (Cro-fab). After a blood transfusion she improved. The doctors said this was the worst case they'd seen. She survived but is still in critical condition. My brothers caught the snake and took pictures, but the snake got away and is still in our neighborhood. The next day we found where it had shed its skin, in front of our house (as if to mock us!). It was about 3 ft long. The vets & my family are all puzzled by this unfortunate incident." NEXT PAGE ---- PAGE MENU:   1  *  2  *  3  *
