Canebrake Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus atricaudatus), 102408

Canebrake Rattlesnake, Elgin, TX 102408

The photo at right was taken  by Tim C., who wrote: "I'm hoping you can ID this snake. I took the photo in Blue, near Elgin, from my driver's seat. The snake was alive and well, and slithered into the ditch before I left. Later I saw another one, of the same kind, a quarter mile down the road. That one was minus its head." This rare canebrake rattlesnake inhabits lowland forests, hilly woodlands near water courses, ponds, and lakes, and canebrakes across the eastern Texas gulf coast. The body darkens toward the tail, which is entirely black. Werler & Dixon (2000), pp. 378-382, provide details on this snake, and is recommended reading. NEXT PAGE.
