Black & White Banded Snake, July 18, 2008,
Houston, TX pg. 2
The
head, enlarged in the photo on the
right, has several interesting features, but the quality of the image is
so poor that I have to guess about much of the head's anatomy. For
example, where is the eye? Is it the small dark spot on the forward
portion of the lower face? I can't tell for sure, but that's where I
think it is, due to the arrangement of the scales of the dorsal head.
The apparent supraocular scale seems unusually large, almost like a
plate of armor similar to that scale on the northern scarlet snake (Cemophora
coccinea copei). The nose is broad, with scales that may be
adapted for digging, and an armored supraocular would help there too.
