Black Rat Snake, Sept. 2008,
Charlotte, NC--pg 2
 The
markings on the head of this juvenile
black rat snake (on right) differ from the juvenile Texas rat (left).
Both will have unmarked, dark-colored dorsal heads when mature. The
black rat snake is found chiefly in the Northeast U.S., southward to
most of inland S. Carolina, NE Georgia, all of Tennessee and Missouri.
All members of the genus Elaphe are accomplished constrictors. Due to
that skill, they've had no need to develop specialized, venom producing
saliva glands, as with some non-constricting New World colubrids.
