Spider Bite First Aid (Recluse Spiders, pg 5): RECLUSE SPIDERS--The controversy (continued): The answer appears to be a firm YES, it matters whether a necrotic infection is misdiagnosed as a recluse spider bite, and vice versa. Though the two appear to be similar kinds of wounds, they are quite different. The differences between them affect, in important ways, how they should be treated. Furthermore, the evidence indicates that many more microbial infections are misdiagnosed as recluse spider bites than the other way around. Warning: misinformation on this subject is rife, and an Internet search produces a raft of spurious material. Worse, some Internet links provide bad advice disguised as gospel truth. You should, in fact, corroborate all the information I have presented here with scientific studies and the opinions of authorities in the fields of medicine, arachnology, and entomology.
