Jerry's On-going Quest for Healthful Skin Care Products

----------

The OrganiTLC  brand is a product of the OrganiServ™ division of EntomoBiotics Inc. It reflects my commitment to using, whenever possible, organic, entirely natural ingredients that treat the body with tender, loving care. The various OrganiTLC Body Formulas described here were created after a long, frustrating search for off-the-shelf, healthful body formulas that protect, smooth, and moisturize skin. Though that search ended in failure, I refused to accept defeat. Working with bugs, snakes, and spidersOrganiTLC Hand & Body, and Foot & Lap all day longfor over 30 yearsmy skin takes a beating. It was aging faster than I was.
Do you read labels? Studying the characteristics of product ingredients is an important part of my work. It's expected that pesticides, solvents, and industrial cleansers will contain harsh chemicals, but why should skincare products? Some skincare additives are not very skin-friendly. They're added to improve consistency and fragrance, and to extend shelf-life, but they don't help skin. I wanted a product without all that extra stuff. But I couldn't find one...
After failing to find a simple, healthful, skincare product already on the shelf, I gave up. The search, that is, not the quest. I had to create a skincare formula from scratch, made with healthful ingredients, and nothing extra. After selecting a few simple ingredients, I mixed them together to see how they worked, and the results exceeded all of my expectations, at least for a while. Continued testing, over weeks that stretched into months, then into years, proved the old adage that "Nothing is as simple as it looks," but I pressed on, convinced the prize was worth the cost.
There's a lot more to crafting a winning formula, I discovered, besides just mixing ingredients together. I had to learn and refine the art of proofing and curing combinations of ingredients under optimal conditions of temperature and humidity. As with making fine wines, attention to detail is crucial. Accurate measurements of weight and volume must be carefully attended to and recorded. Patiently, each new formula has to be painstakingly tested.
Besides using each formula on my own skin, I took them to friends suffering from skin problems, and gave samples to clients, asking for comments. Each comment taught new lessons, and the simple, original formula slowly changed to reflect those lessons. Some of the new blends were amazingly effective, others less so. Some that showed great promise at first became problematic with extended use. Others that seemed less promising grew more impressive as their subtle virtues emerged. Over time, the core formula was transformed into several distinct products:
OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap, for skin that is normally covered by clothing, and two others, OrganiTLC Hand & Face—MYRRH,  and OrganiTLC  Hand & Face—SANDALWOOD, both for skin that is normally exposed to sunlight. All are suitable for men and women, though the formula containing myrrh should not be used during pregnancy.

How Good Skin Goes Bad

My present work is not the only reason my skin got to be in such bad shape. As a member of "The Silent Generation", I was exposed to many highly-toxic chemicals and pesticides in my youth that today are banned, worldwide. My hands—in particular—suffered as a result. Today I do my best to avoid exposure to chemicals that are harmful, but—as most of us realize—that is an impossible job.
I'm not alone, of course. Regardless of which generation you hail from, you live in an environment that is less than friendly to good skin care. A good friend of mine, much younger than I, works in a machine shop. He is constantly exposed to metal-laden machine oils as part of his daily work. You can't imagine the skin problems that produces.
Jerry & Janet 12-11-2009          So, even if you are younger than me (for example, my wife Janet, sitting next to me in the photo at left), your skin—like that of my machinist friend—is probably exposed to harsh chemicals, sunlight, natural pathogens, abrasion, and other affronts. It isn't necessary to be "old and seasoned" to benefit from the various
OrganiTLC  Body Formulas described here. If they make my skin younger, they'll probably do the same for you--no matter what your age.

Healthy Skin is Crucial

Our skin, the largest organ in our body, protects us from all kinds of dangerous pathogens. It insulates us from environmental hazards of other kinds, too. It regulates our temperature, and even synthesizes a whole range of important, life-giving biochemicals that keep us healthy. Its proper care is important; our quality of life depends on it. As we grow older the abuses and contaminants accumulate, and our skin suffers more, causing us to "age" more quickly. Stopping the abuse, while avoiding and removing accumulations of contaminants, is the key to keeping our skin as healthy as possible. And that is an important key to a long, high-quality life span.

Why Several Formulas?

Not all body skin is alike.  The skin on our faces is structurally and microscopically—on the surface or deep in the various layers that skin is made up of—different from that on our backs, legs, and feet. Not only that, but different portions of the body are exposed to varying environmental hazards. The face, neck, forearms and hands usually receive a lot more sunlight than the rest of the body, and skincare products used on these areas, while addressing the need to moisturize dry skin, must also avoid ingredients that are even slightly photosensitizing. By contrast, the feet spend much of their time sequestered in tight-fitting footwear, cloistered in socks, and subjected to hot, moist conditions. The lap, i.e., that portion of the body from the waist to the upper legs, including the buttocks and genitalia, is wrapped up throughout the daymuch as the feetin tight-fitting articles of clothing that increase temperatures and raise moisture levels. Both of these body regions need special help to avoid microbial contaminants that, once established, often spread to the drier, exposed skin of the hands, forearms, neck, and face.

These and other factors suggest that various regions of the human skin have different nutritional and therapeutic needs. That's why several formulas for
OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap came into being. Testing made abundantly clear what common sense inferred: a single skincare formula may work wonders in some body regions, but that single formula won't work perfectly everywhere on the body.

How Deep is Skin-Deep?

The formulas developed for OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap are specifically intended to cause their ingredients to soak—to penetrate—into the skin, where they do the most good. Aging skin is not inevitable. It is a manifestation of deeper, but not intractable, problems. Foot odor and odors emanating from other body regions are, as well, manifestations of transitory, preventable issues.
Consider this: Babies don't suffer from skin problems associated with "growing up" and "growing old." Just because we're no longer babies doesn't mean our bodies are naturally different than when we were infants. The effects of aging don't surface because our bodies lose the faculties of younth. Those faculties remain, but are masked by accumulated skin contaminants.
If we stop the abuse and treat our skin right, the faculties of youth will return to our skin, all over our bodies.

The ingredients in OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap simply nourish the skin so it can return to its natural state. They sink into all the tissues, below the surface, where contaminants have accumulated, to strengthen the tissues, eject accumulated contaminants, and keep new contaminants out.

THE REAL TEST
is to observe what happens after using these products on your body:

At the end of a long, hard day's work, whether you'd slaved at the office or—like me—had spent the day out in the woods or aloft, doing tree surgery, remove your shoes and socks and run your hands over every square inch of your feet. They should be dry, satiny smooth, and free of odors. The nails and nail-beds should be clear and surrounded by soft healthy skin. Now check your socks and footwear. They should smell sweet and clean, not sour and dirty.
This same test, in all its particulars, when applied to any portion of the lap should produce the very same results. Yes, even after a long, hard day at work.
If you cannot perform these two tests right now, and get the results I described, you need
OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap formulas in your life. Testing by a covey of skeptical human guinea-pigs proves this is the result when the various formulas of OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap are used regularly. That, after all, is what they were made for.

Fragrance

Imagine the most healthful, fresh ingredients from Mother Nature’s store. In today's world, we are so far away from the field and the woods that some of the most healthful things found there smell raw and unrefined when brought back to "civilization." OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap are made of those kinds of skin nutrients, without anything extra.

To some, these materials produce aromas reminiscent of naturally tanned leather, shelled new-crop nuts, freshly harvested grains, baled hay from the field, even the blush of a rose, the subtle aromas of fragrant woods and spices, mixed with emanations from a farm kitchen in the midst of the preparation of a home-cooked meal. Because such fragrances reflect genuine goodness at its finest, I left them just as they are, for you to enjoy and appreciate. To do otherwise would require adding chemical smells that don't contribute to improving your skin, but that do reduce the proportions of important, healthful constituents. The addition of synthetic fragrance, merely to change the aroma of a skincare product, can actually lead to skin problems. I won't do that just to make these products smell "better."
One of the important features of the natural fragrances of
OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap is that it mates well with your native scent, and soaks into your skin in minutes, without any lingering aromas.

INGREDIENTS

          A. Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil in the various OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap formulas is harvested from fresh, mature kernels of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). In its virginal, unprocessed state it carries the faint, delicious scent of fresh coconut meat. This unique oil is a complex of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) with a melting point of 76 degrees F. Alone, itCocus nucifera, Franz Eugen Kohler 1887 solidifies at room temperature, yet when mixed with the other constituents in each formula, it continues to flow at temperatures as low as 55 degrees F. Below that temperature, some of the coconut oil may separate out, thickening the mixture; if this happens, simply place the capped bottle in a basin of warm water until the oil fully liquefies again.
Coconut oil is unusually stable. While ordinary, unsaturated oils become rancid within hours at room temperature, virgin coconut oil shows no signs of spoilage, even after being kept at room temperature for more than a year. Ordinary oils decompose when applied to the skin, and deplete living tissues of their vitamin E stores, yet coconut oil's stable chemistry is said to reduce the body’s need for that vital amino acid, testifying to its healthful, antioxidant properties.
The image at left is a copy of a drawing made by Franz Eugen Köhler, from his beautifully illustrated three volume work, Köhler's Medicinal Plants, published in 1887.  It depicts the trunk, fronds, and fruit of Cocos nucifera, the tree that produces the coconut oil used in
OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap formulas.
Coconut oil nourishes the skin, as our testing makes clear. I'm not a chemist, but those who are say coconut oil contains 48-50% lauric acid, a component of human breast milk which, according to some, is an important anti-viral agent. I'm told that lauric acid, when absorbed by human skin, is converted to monolaurin, which some authorities consider a potent RNA and DNA viricidal protectant; combinations of lauric, caprylic, and myristic acids, all found in coconut oil, guard the body against bacterial, protozoal, fungal, and yeast infections. Maybe so. It is sufficient for me that rubbing coconut oil into the skin makes it healthier. From all reports and indications, it does not sensitize skin anywhere on the body.

          B. Tamanu Oil is extracted from rack-dried nutmeats of the tamanu tree (Calophyllum inophyllum) native to Southeast Asia and Polynesia. After searching the globe for the best sources, I chose organic tamanu oil Tamanu Fruit produced by native inhabitants of the 82 volcanic islands within the Republic of Vanuatu (Van-u-AH-tu), located over 1,000 miles east of Australia, in the South Pacific. These natives obtain the oil from trees grown exclusively in rich volcanic soil along coastal beaches. The soil, along with the salt-laden ocean water, imparts a special quality rarely found anywhere else on earth. As an aside, it has been a true pleasure working with the natives of Vanuatu. I hope to have some photographs of them, doing their work, to share with you one of these days soon.
When the fruit is removed and the nuts are dried to a deep brown, they begin to exude a thick, greenish-brown oil with a pleasant, nutty fragrance. Tamanu oil, extracted using cold press methods, contains a variety of lipids, or fatty acids, including one known as calophyllic acid. This reportedly unique fatty acid works in concert with a lactone, calophyllolide, and other glycolipids and phospholipids so that—when it is applied to the skin—it reportedly serves to reduce inflammation, while combating neuralgia, bacteria, and fungi, and accelerating the healing of wounds.
Academic research has, I'm told, scientifically evaluated tamanu oil for its cicatrizing properties, i.e., its ability to promote new tissue growth at extensive wound sites. Those studies show that tamanu oil has an unusual ability to heal such wounds with a minimum of scarring. At least one other natural oil appears to perform similarly, but not without side effects. Tamanu oil, by comparison, is believed to be practically free of side effects. Our testing of this ingredient had one object, simply to determine if it served to nourish skin and assisted in returning it to a state of youthful health. In all respects, it excelled. As far as I can tell, it is not a skin sentizer and thus, as with coconut oil, can be used anywhere on the body.

          C. Jojoba (ho-HO-buh) “oil” isn’t an oil at all, but is a liquid wax obtained from the seeds of the jojoba bush (Simmondsia chinensis). These wild plants—natives of the dry deserts of Arizona, Mexico, and California—live up to 100 years in their natural habitats, untouched by pesticides. Jojoba fruit
The unique liquid wax extracted from the Jojoba seed never goes rancid. It is comprised of long-chain liquid esters (LCE), whose molecules are so small that they penetrate and hydrate the deepest levels of the skin. This molecular structure is similar to natural human sebum, the oil present in healthy human skin. As it soaks in, the skin is left satiny smooth while, according to some authorities, beneath the surface the dermal tissues are made youthfully elastic.
Besides these essential properties, jojoba oil serves as an excellent transporter for other nutrients and oils, carrying them along with it, deep into the skin. Jojoba oil is one of the most effective, natural penetrating and hydrating materials around. It contains 13-14% erucic acid, which is one of the important, healthful ingredients in plants like kale, broccoli, turnips, and cabbage, all members of the Brassicae family. The plants in that family are highly regarded--by many nutritionists and biochemists--for their nutritional, medicinal, and anti-carcinogenic properties.
No negative health effects from the use of jojoba oil have ever been documented in humans. On the other hand, numerous scientific studies point out the beneficial use of high erucic acid cooking oils and mustard oils, whose dietary inclusion appears to protect humans from cardiovascular disease. High erucic acid cooking and skincare oils have a long history of use in India and Bangladesh. The more recent beneficial use of jojoba oil, not to mention the general contribution of the Brassicae family of vegetables to human health, reinforces the view that oils containing erucic acid are healthy dietary supplements. As with the other ingredients described above, our testing of jojoba oil has been carried out in a setting suitable for cosmetics, not medicines, because the
OrganiTLC Hand & Face and OrganiTLC  Foot & Lap formulas that use jojoba oil are not intended to treat or cure ailments of any kind. They simply nourish the skin, and strengthen its ability to avoid unhealthy conditions. Jojoba oil appears to work well in that venue, on skin exposed to sunlight as well as skin that is normally kept covered by clothing.

          E. Myrrh Oil is distilled from the exuded sap of several botanicals that are native to the Middle East. The raw, dried sap has been used for thousands of years for such things as embalming the dead, in perfumery, and for medicinalparticularly antimicrobialpurposes. Records of such uses in Egypt date to cuneiform tablet records from as early as 3000 BCE. Numerous references to the use of myrrh are also found in the Jewish Torah and the Christian New Testament.Commiphora myrrha
The image at left is a copy of a drawing made by Franz Eugen Köhler, as shown in his beautifully illustrated three volume work, Köhler's Medicinal Plants, published in 1887. It depicts the stems, twigs, leaves, flowers, and sap teardrops of the tree that, today, is most prized as a source of myrrh, Commiphora myrrha, the source of the distilled oil used in
OrganiTLC Body Formulas.

The sap used to produce myrrh oil comes from trees of the botanical family Burseraceae. It happens that frankincense is derived from trees in this same family, but in the genus Boswellia. Myrrh comes from trees, shrubs, and small plants that, for the most part, are in the genus Commiphora. This latter genus includes over 185 species, most armed with thorns, and many producing aromatic resins. Besides the genus Commiphora, trees in the genus Balsamodendron are also considered, by some, to be a legitimate source of myrrh. Specific trees native to Jordan (Commiphora gileadensis), and to Yemen, Somalia, and Ethiopia (Commiphora myrrha) are particularly prized for the quality of their aromatic sap, which produces the delicate, but spicy scents of balsam, vanilla and amber.
Resinous sap from these trees is harvested by tapping, a process whereby small incisions are made in the bark, causing the tree to exude a milky sap that hardens on contact with the air. The golden teardrop-shaped exudate is collected about two weeks later, when the cut is reopened so fresh sap will flow anew. After the globules are stored for three months to harden, they are sold to a merchant who grades and sorts them for the marketplace. The essential oil contained within the sap is steam distilled, producing about 1-3% of oil from a given weight of sap. The oil is prized, it is said, for its antimicrobial properties, for its stability, and for the fact that it does not sensitize skin. It is sufficient for me that it contributes to the maintenance of healthy skin, and that it adds a subtle fragrance that users enjoy. However, I understand that it should not be used in or on the body during pregnancy, as it can stimulate uterine contractions. Myrrh oil is an ingredient in
OrganiTLC Hand & Face—MYRRH, but is absent in OrganiTLC Hand & Face—SANDALWOOD. During pregnancy, ladies should use the latter formula.

          E. Sandalwood has, for centuries, been prized for its woodsy fragrance and antimicrobial qualities. The powdered wood is used as incense and as a mosquito repellent. Whole wood is used to make boxes that protect stored tapestries from moths and other insects. And the oil, distilled from the heartwood, is used as a medicine, a perfume, and as a fixative for soap-making.  Sandalwood (Santalum album)
The botanical family Santalaceae is widely distributed, and includes 45 genera and over 1000 species of partially parasitic flowering plants. These root-parasitic plants, which employ non-destructive haustoria to obtain nutrients from the roots of other plants, only thrive in the presence of suitable hosts, particularly those in the genera Acacia, Maireana, and Atriplex. Within the Santalaceae, the genus Santalum comprises about 25 species of woody trees and shrubs, found from India, through Malaysia, to the Pacific Islands all the way to Hawaii and the Juan Fernandez Islands off the coast of South America. Sandalwood is harvested from a number of these species, including the most famous, Santalum album (Indian sandalwood.)

The image at left is a copy of a drawing made by Franz Eugen Köhler, as shown in his beautifully illustrated three volume work, Köhler's Medicinal Plants, published in 1887. It depicts the stems, twigs, leaves, flowers, and fruit of the Indian sandalwood tree, Santalum album. However, the source of the distilled sandalwood oil used in OrganiTLC Hand & Face—SANDALWOOD is the western Australian tree Santalum spicatum

In antiquity, when sandalwood first achieved notoriety as a spicewood, wild trees were cut and marketed wherever they were discovered. Over the centuries, they became rare in the wild, to the point that today most sandalwood trees are cultivated in plantations. There, as in the wild, they must be planted in direct sunlight near host plants whose roots supply them with essential nutrients. The trees cannot be harvested for many years. Such plantations occupy considerable space with low productivity, which makes them vulnerable targets for residential expansion. It is no surprise that the number of such plantations has dropped, worldwide, as a result.

Because demand for sandalwood has risen while its availability has dwindled, prices have adjusted upward accordingly. The sandalwood oil used in our OrganiTLC Hand & Face—SANDALWOOD comes from plantations in Australia, where the native western Australian species Santalum spicatum is cultivated. This species has higher fractions of farnesol and alpha-bisabolol than other sandalwood sources, including the Indian sandalwood, which, I am told, improves its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory qualities. Such medicinal properties are—if present—nice fringe benefits, but this oil is used in OrganiTLC Hand & Face—SANDALWOOD simply because my testing has shown that it contributes to the maintenance of healthy skin.

          F. Phenethyl propionate is the ester produced when phenethyl alcohol and propionic acid are combined. Phenethyl propionate is the natural source of one of the dominant fragrances expressed by fresh rose and geranium florets.   Rosa centifolia, Franz Eugen Kohler, 1887
Phenethyl alcohol, for its part, occurs widely in nature, as an important constituent of many essential plant oils. It is found in the oils extracted from carnations, roses and other members of the rose family. It is also found in hyacinths, orange blossoms, and many other beautiful flowers. Important antimicrobial properties, with particular faculties as an antifungal agent, help it protect the flowers that contain it, and probably explain its presence in such botanicals even more than its intrinsic fragrance.
Propionic acid, the second part of the phenethyl propionate ester, is a naturally occurring carboxylic acid with a pungent odor. This acid was first described by Johann Gottleib in 1844, after he found it to be one of the degradation products of sugar. It is known to inhibit the growth of mold and certain bacteria, and as a natural preservative that, when combined with certain alcohols, produces esters with pleasant, fruity odors.

The image at left is a copy of a drawing made by Franz Eugen Köhler, from his beautifully illustrated three volume work, Köhler's Medicinal Plants, published in 1887. Despite the fact that commercial quantities of phenethyl propionate are, today, often prepared from peanut-based sources, such preparations are certified to be free of any known allergens. Because both phenethyl alcohol and propionic acid are simple, easily purified molecules bereft of allergen proteins--in much the same way that alcoholic spirits distilled from wheat, rye, and barley, all of which contain gluten, are absolutely gluten-free--the association with peanuts appears to be of no concern.
Like extra-virgin coconut oil, phenethyl propionate is said by some authorities to have fungicidal properties, and the two may be synergists, working together to help maintain healthy skin in a myriad of ways. By itself, it imparts a sweet, fruity aroma, with rose overtones, that mates well with the fragrances of the other ingredients. My tests show that it is an excellent skin penetrant, and that faculty, along with its sweet, pleasantly fruity aroma, make it an excellent addition to the various
OrganiTLC  Body Formulas regardless of any other properties that it may possess, and that's good enough for me.

----------

These ingredients, along with a number of others, were carefully selected, combined, and tested. The resulting formula was then tested by friends and acquaintances who, like me, needed a skincare formula that would help keep their skin from aging so fast. I asked them to be candid in sharing their experiences with me. Over time, certain ingredients were dropped, others were added, and proportions were changed, as comments and observations were collected and analyzed. The present mixes of ingredients in the various OrganiTLC Body Formulas are the best that have presently been found, but new additions are being evaluated. In fact, I am determined to test every essential plant oil known to man that has shown potential for maintaining healthy skin, as possible ingredients in these products. These formulas, there, are subject to change as additional ingredients, and more efficacious proportions are found and properly tested. The various OrganiTLC Body Formulas discussed here have been shown to perform at superior levels in all the roles that healthful body formulas should be expected to play.

OrganiTLC Body Formulas contain only the ingredients listed here. The subset of these ingredients that apply to a given formula are listed on the bottle. No animals were harmed orexcept for flushing a few rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus haematodus) out of one or two tamanu trees while collecting the dropped nuts on the groundeven annoyed in its manufacture. Applied to the skin, it mates gently with your native scent to produce a pleasant, unassuming effect.

Being made with 100% pure ingredients,
OrganiTLC Body Formulas should not be exposed to wide swings in temperature. When subjected to prolonged, high temperatures, some of their ingredients may lose their beneficial qualities.

At temperatures below 55 degrees F,
OrganiTLC Body Formulas will thicken and some of their ingredients may separate. This will not alter the quality of each ingredient, but may affect their synergistic effects if the product is dispensed in a thickened, separated state. If thickening or separation of ingredients occurs, simply warm the bottle by placing it in warm water until the contents become fully liquefied. Then shake well before using.

Suggested Uses

The various ways a person can use the various OrganiTLC ™ Body Formulas are too numerous to mention. They include general skin care, and palliative care for minor scrapes, stings, and bites (but should never be used for medical conditions that should be evaluated by a competent medical professional.) They also include care for hands, feet, and nails, as a tonic for hair and scalp, as a deodorizing, cleansing, and refreshing perineal lotion, even as an intimate lubricant. In all these roles, regular OrganiTLC Body Formula use has been described by its users as unsurpassed.

This product can be used as often as needed. A few drops, rubbed in after every hand-washing, or on other parts of the skin, hair, or nails several times a day, maintains a healthy condition wherever you may wish to apply it. Regular applications to nail beds may assist, in conjunction with medicines prescribed by your physician, in preventing and recovering from nail fungi. Skin problems of various kinds, that you are treating with medications in accordance with advice from your physician, may require using more than a few drops at a time, and yes, it is O.K. to splash it on whenever the occasion demands it. Just remember, the more you use, the longer it takes to soak in. Wipe any excess off before dressing to avoid transitory marks on clothing.

OrganiTLC ™ Body Formulas are for EXTERNAL USE ONLY. Test on a small portion of skin—before using broadly—to avoid the risk of allergic reactions. No such reactions have been reported, but the wise err on the side of caution. This product is not intended to be placed in the mouth or swallowed, so KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN, and away from anyone who cannot read and follow these directions.
