The Keyhole, Going Up (pg. 2)

by Jerry Cates

Before leaving the Keyhole, I turned around and took a photo of the Boulderfield, with Mt. Lady Washington in the background. Then I did an about-face, and started down to The Ledges. Yes, to get to the summit from the Keyhole, you must first make a short descent.

Concerns about surviving the trek from the keyhole to the summit with no mishaps led me to decide not to try to take any photos on the way up. Instead, all the photo-taking would be done on the way back. After all, it's the same mountain both ways, right? I figured that on the way back I would know the ropes and would have a better idea about how to minimize the risks involved in trying to balance the processes of taking good pictures while simultaneously concentrating on safely getting back to the Boulderfield.

Well, it is the same mountain, so I was right about that. But while taking the photos on the way back I almost never turned around to take backward shots in the direction of the summit. So what was photographed was the trail back, not the trail going away from the Keyhole. It isn't the same. But I did get some good photos of all the important parts of the trail, even if they are mostly presented from the perspective of a hiker on his way down the mountain...

It would be possible to present the photos taken of the trail right now, even though they were shot on the way back. It could even be done in reverse sequence. You would only have to pretend they were taken on the way up. But I won't ask you to do that. Instead, the photos will be presented later in the narrative, in the order that they were taken.
