Fishing Spider
(Dolomedes), Shane, Bulverde TX pg 2
This
view gives shows what the spider's
prey sees before it pounces. The markings
on the anterior abdomen appear to me as an owlish pair of eyes.
This might cause prey to fixate there rather than on the head, i.e., at
a pair of false "eyes," to look in vain for evidence the predator
is about to attack. Since these "eyes" never
change, watching them would throw prey off guard, to the spider's
advantage. The spider's true eyes are hidden in the dark markings of the
head.
