Exterminating Puss Caterpillars, Pg. 4: Biological pest management is receiving much attention today. As a result of this trend, several over-the-counter biological agents for puss caterpillar control are available. One of these, distributed under the names THURICIDE and DIPEL 150 (also found under other brand names), contains the viable but inactive spore of the microbe Bacillus thuringiensis, var. kurstaki (abbreviated as B.t.k.). As with many chemical pesticides, this agent is effective against puss caterpillars as long as they are actively feeding on foliage, but unlike chemical pesticides B.t.k. has no effect on other insects, including beneficial organisms that prey on puss caterpillars. Mature puss caterpillars that are no longer feeding will not be affected by B.t.k. As a result, after applying B.t.k., wait a few days and return to the treated area to look for active caterpillars. Those found should be removed manually, using a gloved hand, and placed in a container of soapy water. NEXT PAGE.
