Exterminating Puss Caterpillars, Pg. 3:  In theory, these pests can be controlled using ordinary pesticides labeled for caterpillar control. If you choose to use traditional pest management methods, select one labeled specifically for puss caterpillars.

TRADITIONAL PESTICIDES ARE NOT RECOMMENDED to control puss caterpillars. Strong evidence indicates that traditional pesticides lead to more serious puss caterpillar infestations, later, at the treatment site.  

The most effective treatment method avoids traditional pesticides, and substitutes alternative, non-chemical methods that work well. When traditional pesticide spraying is avoided, new infestations rarely recur the next season, but when aggressive spraying with traditional pesticides is done, serious infestations often recur, sometimes for several seasons in a row, and usually in greater numbers than before. This appears to result from the fact that traditional pesticides kill beneficial predators that naturally exterminate puss caterpillars and prevent new infestations. NEXT PAGE.
