A Walk in a Fern Bluff Park (21 April 2007)

Cheatham Park, Page 2

by Jerry Cates

This tiny cluster of even more miniscule flowers was found in a protected bit of grass near a tree. See the reddish edging on the leaves?  The flowers have two lips, one down and the other up.  This is related to Self-Heal (Prunella vulgaris), but lacks some of the features common to that flower.

And not far away, a spread of straggler daisies (Calyptocarpus vialis) caught our eyes.  Its incredibly small flower is difficult to photograph, but this one came out just fine.

Notice in the flower below that two curious structures  are associated with it...

Another tiny flower, this was found on the other side of the park, alone.  It was the only one of its kind we saw today.

This, too, was all alone, and just as tiny.
