A Walk in Fern Bluff Park (17 Mar. 2007) pg 2

Fern Bluff Park is home to a variety of cacti, including this small stand of Opuntia.  The genus has two branches, the prickly pears (Platyopuntia, which have flat joints, like this one) and the chollas (Cylindropuntia, with rounded joints).  The stand below is a prickly pear, absent the fruit. They are commonly browsed by cattle and deer for food.

Though the cows from neighboring pastures rarely get to wander around our parks (they do get out, as certain evidence left around the Activity Center made clear this morning) deer spend lots of time here.  The pellets shown below are proof of that, and the large number of fresh pellet deposits indicated that a number of deer were feeding here last night.
