A Walk in a Fern Bluff Park (05 May 2007) This walk took place in Fern Bluff Park by Jerry Cates Overcast, Windy, but Lots of Flowers... Texas Bindweed (Convolvulus equitans)
How do you describe the petals of this medium-sized flower? Botanists say it is five-lobed at the rim, with the angles of each lobe extending outward as slender points. It is a member of the Morning-Glory Family (the Convolvulaceae), and though we enjoy looking at it, to farmers it is a serious pest. Its prolific vine reaches out to cultivated plants, grabs them, entwines itself around them, and loves them to death. Hence its name, Texas bindweed. Crops, like some people, suffer from too much love... Lots of Good People to Share Them With...
These nice people were trekking through the park when we bumped into each other and, of course, I had to take their photograph. I thank them for indulging me. The young people below were out looking for flowers to complete a school project for older sister. Considering all the flowers that were presenting today, they surely met with great success.
Prickly Pear (Opuntia spp.) The prickly pears were blooming furiously today. Their flowers are bright yellow and quite large.
On each cactus, the blooming flowers are surrounded by numerous unopened buds that promise to keep the floral show going for some time.
